I.Mech.E Professional Review Report:
Neil Thompson

B1) Taiwan Railway Electrification Project

GEC Transportation Projects Ltd co-ordinated the activities of a group of companies involved in the project, each of which had a representative in Taiwan responsible for their particular discipline.

GEC Traction Ltd supplied a fleet of twenty locomotives and thirteen electrical multiple units.
As Traction representative I was responsible at site for erection, commissioning and service maintenance for both types of vehicles.

Initially I was assisted by five engineers but as the commissioning load increased and vehicles began to enter traffic staff levels were increased to include ten engineers.
Mechanical difficulties encountered in the early days of service operation on locomotive underframe and electrical multiple unit ride problems (fitting anti-roll bars) necessitated that I recruit extra local labour which increases staff levels to thirty men. (re section A1.4).

Progress reports were dispatched weekly to the Manager of Erection and Service Department, technical discussion was direct with the individual specialist but the Department Manager was kept informed at all stages.

1.1) In order to illustrate the type of work in which I was involved, without resorting to expansive descriptions I submit the following railway photographs:-
